League leaders Sampdoria were held by newly-promoted Parma.

Franco Semioli, Pietro Accardi and Fernando Tissone were out injured for the Blucerchiati.

Antonio Cassano went on a jinking run past at least five Parma players before spinning to chip a cross in towards Giampaolo Pazzini. Former Samp ‘keeper Antonio Mirante made a fingertip save.

The Gialloblu also went close moments later when a free kick was flashed across the face of goal.

Sampdoria took the lead when Mannini’s long pass found Pazzini who headed in over a helpless Mirante.

Parma’s equaliser came from a well-worked move. Jonathan Biabiany knocked a Castellini cross down for Nicola Amoruso, who spread it back out for Daniele Galloppa’s low shot from the edge of the box.

Angelo Palombo and Andrea Poli went close from distance.

After the restart there was a penalty claim by Sampdoria when Cassano rolled the ball across the six-yard box for Pazzini, who fell between two sliding challenges, but Mazzoleni waved play on.

Poli had a great opportunity to restore Samp’s lead. Padalino flicked it out wide to the unmarked Poli, whose angled drive went between Mirante’s legs, but MacDonald Mariga rushed back for a decisive goal-line clearance.

Parma finished the match on top and Castellazzi had to save Nicola Amoruso’s powerful effort at the near post.
